The film Babygirl, starring Nicole Kidman and Antonio Banderas, is one of the titles in competition at the 81st Venice International Film Festival.
The film is directed and scripted by Halina Reijn and stars Nicole Kidman, Antonio Banderas, and Harris Dickinson.
Babygirl is a dramatic and intense story about the life of Romy, a powerful businesswoman, and her secret relationship with her young assistant, Samuel. Their relationship jeopardizes Romy's professional and personal life, bringing to light the complexities and contradictions of human nature. The film will be distributed by Eagle Pictures and Weekend Films.
The story tells how a forbidden and intense relationship between Romy and her young assistant Samuel explores confusion about power, gender, age, hierarchy and primal instinct. Despite the forbidden nature of their relationship, the joy of exploration is liberating and even healing.
“We all have a black box full of fantasies and taboos. I am fascinated by the duality of human
nature, and with this film I wanted to explore, without judgment, the opposing forces that make up our personalities. For me, feminism is the freedom to explore a woman's vulnerability, love, shame, anger and inner beast. In the middle of our lives, we have to confront our inner demons. The more we suppress our shadow, the more dangerous our behavior can become.”
